How Do You Take Care of Your Teeth While Wearing Braces?
Dental concerns like bite issues and misaligned or crooked teeth are no longer a problem these days. All it takes are braces and retainers. But it doesn’t end there.
To maintain your straight teeth and bright smile, here are some tips to take care of teeth with braces or retainers:
Foods to Avoid
Hard or crunchy foods like apples, carrots, and nuts may loosen or break your braces. Chewy foods like caramels stick to the wires. Sugary foods like cakes, chocolates, and sodas may cause tooth decay and cavities. WebMD recommends cutting food into bite-size pieces so you can chew them easily.
Brushing and Flossing
Use a brush designed for cleaning between braces. Since plaque clings underneath the wires, it is important to floss through the space between the arch wire and the upper tooth, and on each side of the rest of the teeth.
To prevent plaque build-up, chew plaque disclosing tablet to identify the areas you missed. You may also use a mouthwash that removes plaque. Take note that you need to brush and floss at least twice a day.
Never use toothpaste to clean your retainer. Use a denture cleanser added to a cup of warm water to disinfect it at least once a week. Rinse the retainer thoroughly with plain water.
The use of whitening toothpaste or mouthwash is a big no-no. Doing so may cause color variation when your braces come off. The teeth underneath the wires may not be as white as the others.
