Foods to Avoid
Hard or crunchy foods like apples, carrots, and nuts may loosen or break your braces. Chewy foods like caramels stick to the wires. Sugary foods like cakes, chocolates, and sodas may cause tooth decay and cavities. WebMD recommends cutting food into bite-size pieces so you can chew them easily.
Brushing and Flossing
Use a brush designed for cleaning between braces. Since plaque clings underneath the wires, it is important to floss through the space between the arch wire and the upper tooth, and on each side of the rest of the teeth.

Never use toothpaste to clean your retainer. Use a denture cleanser added to a cup of warm water to disinfect it at least once a week. Rinse the retainer thoroughly with plain water.
