Finding Help for Low Thyroid Problems

Woman with hand on her neckThe human body requires a gentle balance of hormones in order to function optimally. Various glands secrete these hormones. The thyroid, for example, has a very strong influence over different functions in the body, such as growth and development, blood flow, hair growth and more.

The thyroid also regulates metabolism. Low thyroid function can result in weight gain and depression. Addressing low thyroid conditions isn’t simple. Some clinics, such as, have spent years of research to target specific treatments for low thyroid problems.

Symptoms of Low Thyroid Disease

Thyroid problems affect more women than men. The most common symptoms of hypothyroidism or an underactive thyroid include fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, depressed moods, dry skin and brittle nails.

The condition can be diagnosed easily by testing the level of thyroid hormones in the blood. When the hormone levels are low, patients are also asked to undergo an ultrasound test to check for nodules or lumps in the thyroid.

Low thyroid condition is commonly caused by Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which means inflammation of the thyroid gland. Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disorder wherein the body produces antibodies because it sees the thyroid gland as a threat.

In some cases, the thyroiditis stems from a viral infection. This is why it is important to go to a medical professional and undergo the required tests.

Treatment for Low Thyroid Conditions

The symptoms for low thyroid condition could worsen if left unmedicated and untreated. In manageable cases, doctors prescribe patients medication to increase the levels of thyroid hormone in the body.

However, in cases where there are nodules or lumps, which could possibly be cancerous, doctors suggest radiation therapy to the neck area. The radiation targets the cells in the thyroid and reduces the size of the nodules.

Early detection is still key. If you suspect that you have low thyroid disease, have yourself checked immediately.
