You may have heard the reoccurring adage that ‘abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym’. This is only partly true, though, as proper exercise is equally important in the goal of shaping your abs. We won’t deny, however, how important a proper diet is to get that six-pack. Admittedly, finding the ideal diet plan is a struggle, but there are some pointers you need to keep in mind to make your goal of getting a six-pack a reality.
A Balance Between Protein And Carbs
You know what protein is; it’s instrumental in building muscle and achieving that six-pack dream. Ideally, you should keep your protein levels high as it also boosts your metabolic rate up and keeps you from feeling hungry. Don’t look to supplements, though; instead, turn to high protein foods.
Some of the foodstuffs you should incorporate are lean beef and poultry, non-fat cheese, and fish. Tuna and salmon are ideal seafood not only because they are high in protein, but also because they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Carbohydrates, on the other hand, are what you need to monitor constantly. While carbs keep your body energized and keep you pumped, too much isn’t healthy and may cause your metabolic rate to go down once you ‘burn out’ of carbs. You need to balance this with your protein intake; ideally, protein should dominate but there may be instances wherein you may need to increase your carb intake to keep your metabolic rate high.
Watch What You Snack On
It’s easy to lose control when you eat snacks, especially if it’s just after a good workout and you suddenly start getting the munchies. Instead of grabbing the nearest bag of chips, get the healthier alternative.
Almonds are a versatile nut that can be eaten on its own as a snack or part of a larger meal. It’s rich in vitamin E and a good source of magnesium, a mineral that your body needs to produce more energy and in turn, maintain muscle tissue. Eating these is also a great way to regulate your blood sugar.
The humble egg is also a good alternative snack that’s rich in protein. Eating one hard-boiled egg as a snack is a good way to supplement your diet and also keep you full. Instead of bread in the morning, boil and egg or two to help start your day.
While you can’t necessarily build your abs solely by proper diet, there’s no denying the crucial role it plays in making your ab workouts and exercises more effective. Think of the change in diet as the foundation to getting that six-pack you’ve always dreamed of.
